Talking Point Series - Leadership Pivots with David Parkin

August, 2019

We were delighted to present David Parkin to headline our Talking Point event on ‘Leadership Pivots’.

David’s long list of achievements on the field as an elite AFL player and coach are well documented and significant. Uniquely though, his perspectives on leadership, education and health have been established across broad domains of contribution. David is an Adjunct Professor at Deakin University, he is an author many times over and ABC commentator. David brings a truly unique combination of intellect, discipline, foresight and pragmatism. We couldn’t think of anyone better to talk about ‘Leadership Pivots’.

Through a range of stories and experiences, David shared his insights into how contextual factors (e.g. changing strategy, society, performance demands) influence the need for organisations and individual leaders to understand and enact leadership differently based on the prevailing context (i.e. a leadership pivot).  Reflecting on his own career to date, his various leadership pivots and the relevance of that for organisations seeking to be agile, empowered and most importantly high performing, David demonstrated his strength as a leader and genuine human being.

With balanced and deep thought borne from experience, coupled with the honesty and authenticity that underpins performance, David's openness and warmth allowed shared discussion providing plenty of space for audience questions and reflection.

Silicon Valley to SIOP: How super-brands are leveraging culture and leadership to shape the future

May 2019

After returning from a whirlwind study tour of the US, our Spring Point team were happy to share the culture and leadership practices that are shaping the performance of some of the globe's best brands.

Knitting together learning from study tour visits of Google, Amazon and Salesforce, as well as insights gleaned when we then joined 6000 Organisational Psychologists from around the world to talk about the Future World of Work, at the annual SIOP convention, this made for a fascinating analysis of the theory as well as the best and latest practices being used in large and complex organisations now.

Amplifying Learning Through Emerging Technology

March 2019

Organisations are making important strategic shifts to use technology to propel human and business performance. In learning, technology is shifting the way we interact with employees, train skills, open up conversations, and collect faster and more reliable data. But with technology changing every day, how do HR professionals and businesses identify and work with emerging technology that is scalable, sustainable and has maximum impact?

Over the past 12 months we've delivered global digital learning programs with ANZ and Vicinity Centres and engaged with diverse a group of clients, thought leaders and creatives. This event explores the two projects and the benefits and barriers to using emerging technology within organisations to amplify learning.

Panelists:

Natasha Carrick, Digital Lead, Spring Point
Justine La Roche, Director, Spring Point
Dianne Kanagalingam, Learning & Development Manager, Vicinity Centres
Rae Patena, Journey Expert, Chapter Lead, ANZ

If you missed it you can catch up with a video of the panel discussion here.

Culture and Capability at Scale: What Works?

December 2018

We explored how we can we invest in culture and capability initiatives to improve business outcomes. Because if the goal is to create lasting and scaled organisational change, knowing the principles that enable the success of this work is critical. Put simply, what really works?

We’ve spent much time focussed on exploring this over the last 12 months, engaging locally and internationally with some of the world’s leading thinkers, practitioners, and academics. Some of the key findings explored by Dylan Flavell and Justine La Roche included:

Is investment in the development of culture and capability a good bet? Where does it sit relative to other forms of business investment?

Of the culture and capability interventions that make a difference, what characteristics are always present?

What assumptions about culture and capability development efforts might need re-thinking, or debunking?

If you missed the session you can catch up with the main insights from Dylan Flavell & Justine La Roche with the video of the event.

The Banking Royal Commission and Organisational Culture: Beyond the headlines towards positive action

October 2018

The critical role of culture in organisational performance and risk management has been prominent throughout the Royal Commission. In this Talking Point, we considered the implications of the Commission’s findings for the way culture is developed in all organisations, not just the banks, to support risk management and organisational performance more broadly. How can the outcomes of this inquiry be a catalyst for positive change, how can the practices of different industries inform one another, and how can we move beyond headlines towards evidence-based and positive action?

This Talking Point explored practical actions with a diverse audience of board members, business leaders, HR and risk professionals. If you wish to find out more, please get in touch with us for the slide deck.

Purpose, Brand and Culture: The New Business Triple Threat

July 2018

Business has reached a critical pivot point. Disruptive forces such as globalisation, digitalisation, geo-political instability and rapidly shifting customer and employee expectations are sparking debate about the role organisations could, or should, play in society. As a result, a clear reason for being beyond profits is becoming increasingly important to defining success. What's more, research confirms that meaning matters. Purpose-led organisations make more money, have engaged employees and more loayal customers. They're also better at innovation and transformational change. Purpose-led organisations understand that "share of heart" not just share of wallet is key to sustainable competitive advantage. They intentionally align their reason for being (purpose) with their outward facing identity (brand) and inward reality (culture). The result is an authentic commitment to deliver value for others in all its forms – emotional, experiential, social, and financial.
